Chapter Three
April looked at her daughters with such love and care, more tears of happiness streaming down her cheeks. She giggled a little bit and held Mikayla’s hand with her free hand, and softly began to speak.
“I'm sorry I couldn't get you a baby brother,” she said, smiling from ear to ear. “I hoped that you wouldn't mind a baby sister instead.”
“I don't, mom. It’s okay. I still love you,” Mikayla replied with a smile, and she hugged her mom tightly. She new her mom wanted to do everything for her and give her everything she wants, but this moment was the beginning to an end to being spoiled. It saddened her, but at the same time, she was happy. She’ll finally have someone to play with and share all her secrets with! Someone who will actually talk to her and want to be around her…
A few days later, when Mikayla got home from school, she saw her mom sitting on their soft, green couch with Jessie, holding her and humming a song from The Phantom of the Opera, a musical her whole family enjoyed. She walked through the kitchen and into the far entrance of the living room, peeking at the baby before skipping up and bouncing onto the couch next to her mother. She stares longingly at the baby, wanting to hold her precious little sister. Her mom must have known that Mikayla wanted to hold her, so she positioned the baby in Mikayla's arms and let her hold Jessie.
Mikayla once again started thinking about how responsible she was going to have to be from now on, and being almost seven years old, it's a scary thought. Babysitting her sister at home alone, changing diapers, having to share all of her toys and belongings, not to mention her parent's attention... she definitely wasn't ready.\
Ever since her sister had been born, things definitely changed in her family. Her dad, who took her and her mom in when Mikayla's father left, changed. Her parents were barely ever home, so she was responsible for taking care of her sister on a daily basis, making the beginning of her life busy and difficult. Mikayla being the first born child, she was the guinea pig- her sister, Jessica, got way better treatment than Mikayla had, which caused her to be mistreated and neglected. This lasted for years on end, nothing ever changing.
