Chapter Two

Chapter Two
Mikayla’s mouth gaped open in utter shock. She couldn't believe her parents could do this to her. She was so upset that she decided to remain quiet until they got to the house she had to stay at for the night. The house was big, and the property was three times bigger. They had a large playground, complete with a swing set for two and a long, swirly slide. They parked the car next to an old-fashioned motor trike and walked up to the door, the two story house towering over them as they walk into the kitchen. Mikayla runs into the room she was sleeping in and closes the door, leaning against it while catching her breath. She walks over to the bed and plopped down, sighing and staring at the ceiling full of taped on stars and planets. For hours she wondered how life was going to be with a new addition to the family from now on. Was she going to be neglected? Will she have you take care of the baby all the time? She finally fell asleep with one last thought in her head, “I wish I were a princess.”
She woke up that next morning with dark circles around her eyes and dry lips. She must have stayed up until maybe 3 o’clock in the morning thinking about all sorts of things. She got up from the bed and tiptoed to the door, opening it quietly to see if anyone was up. She didn’t hear anything, but when she walked out of the room and into the kitchen, she saw people standing outside through the window. As she got closer to the window, she was able to make out who it was; her dad and Robin. She tries to listen in to their conversation when Tucker suddenly comes up from behind her and yells, scaring her and making her shriek. Then she sees their parents look their way and finish their conversation, coming inside to check out the ruckus.
“What’s going on,” Robin asks, crossing her arms.
“Tucker scared me!” Mikayla replied, her too crossing her arms and lowering her lip. Her dad goes to pick her up when Robin stopped him.
“Mike, don’t baby her, she’s six years old,” she told him, making Mikayla sad. I guess this is where it all starts. “Were you two listening in to our conversation?” she asked the kids, and they both shook their head.
“We were just getting breakfast,” Tucker covered for her. Mikayla smiled at him and then turned back to the two adults standing over them. Then it occurred to her that that her dad was there instead of with her mom, and her curiosity spiked.
“Daddy, why are you here and not with mommy?” she asked her dad, looking at him, who towers 2-3 feet taller than her.
“I actually came to take you to see your mother,” he replied to Mikayla. She got excited and started jumping around waiting to leave, until she remembered that it was to go see a baby brother. She got a little sad, and when her dad noticed, he picked her up and held her upside down, making her laugh. They said their goodbyes and he carried Mikayla to the car, setting her down gently in the backseat. They drove to the hospital her mom was staying at, and as they entered, Mikayla noticed there were a lot of people of all ages. Her and her dad walked up to the front desk, hand in hand.
“Can you give me directions to get to April Mckinzie? I'm here to see my new kid,” he asked the receptionist. She looked up the room number, and gave them directions to the room. They took the elevator up to floor 3, made a right, and arrived at the right room. There her mom and a baby sat in a hospital bed, both crying. Mikayla ran up to her mom and looked at the new baby, confused.

“Meet your new baby sister, Jessica,” her mom said softly. Mikayla just stared at the baby, she didn't care anymore that it was a girl instead of a boy. Seeing her precious, fragile little sibling in her mom's arms made her smile and shed a tear.
